Stop the Wallarah 2 Coal Mine

Dear Lucy,

The NSW Liberal Government’s green-lighting of the Wallarah 2 Coal Mine presents a serious threat to our vital local resources.

Given the warnings issued by the State Government’s independent environmental committee, I am particularly concerned about the impact on our drinking water supplies.

According to the independent body:

“There are significant risks associated with the proposed project having a detrimental and long-lasting effect on an already stressed water supply catchment”

 – Independent Expert Scientific Committee on Coal Seam Gas and Large Coal Mining Development, “Advice to decision maker on Wallarah 2 Coal Project” – 18 April 2013

The impacts of this project will affect all Central Coast residents.

The mine threatens to dump 300 megalitres or 120 Olympic sized swimming pools of mine waste into the Central Coast water supply each year.

The federal government has power under the EPBC Act to reject this project – the “water trigger” amendment introduced by the former Gillard Government.

I urge you to reconsider your position on the Wallarah 2 coal mine, meet with Minister Frydenberg to advocate a federal rejection of the project and stand with Labor to protect our local water supplies for all Coasties.
